Inspired by Nature

My work is characterized by simple and organic shapes, with a focus on contrasting textures, soft lines, and gradual transitions of earthy tones. My pieces often reflect the natural world, and sometimes create associations with abstract landscapes.
Nature is my strongest source of inspiration. My current collections are especially inspired by the High Desert, the Eastern Sierra, and the sea flats in Death Valley National Park.
From an early age, I have felt drawn to nature, from family walks in the forest in my early childhood to exploring natural places during travels to Southeast Asia in my 20s and visiting American national parks in my 30s.
Moreover, studying about plants for several years and learning the art of Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana, have shaped my style and continue to be a major source of inspiration.

My passion extends beyond the visible art to the underlying medium I am using - glazes. I love how the combination of natural raw materials can create interesting effects, such as crackling and crawling. Through the transformative power of heat and kiln insulation, we can imitate things we observe in nature, and create something new from nature's own resources. Seeing these raw material compositions in their different stages, transforming from the dull paint-like appearance of a raw glaze to a range of colors and textures after the firing, excites me. It provides a never-ending source of textural exploration.

My pieces strive to evoke emotions; my designs are intentionally imperfect, non-pretentious, and reveal stages of fading, such as a tree dropping its leaves in the fall. The same idea is behind glaze crawling off a piece, exposing the raw earth-like material underneath, such as lichen moss would peel off a rock or from an old wooden door.My artistic journey is an ongoing work in progress, a continuation of a search. I am always looking for improvement, but there is no final goal to achieve. The journey, after all, is the destination in itself.
